The foundation of what will become Crum & Forster (C&F) is formed, as The North River Insurance Company (North River) – organized by Capt. Richard Whiley and $350,000 in capital – opens for business in New York.

Fire Insurance company plaque

United States Fire Insurance Company (U.S. Fire), the paper on which most of C&F’s business is currently written, is established. Additionally, The North River Insurance Co. charter is renewed.

President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation.

Frederick Crum

Frederick H. Crum joins North River; James Ackerman joins three years later.

John A. Forster

1888

John A. Forster joins The North River Insurance Company as a clerk.

Allemannia Insurance

1896

Crum, Forster and Ackerman leave North River to establish their own managing general agency – Crum & Forster – which opens for business, representing Allemannia Fire of Pittsburgh.

US Fire Insurance Company

C&F acquires U.S. Fire.

C&F is incorporated in New York with paid-in capital of $100,000.

The start of World War I, which ends in late 1918.

North River policy

Frederick Crum becomes president of North River and C&F receives its first full management contract from North River; Crum dies the next year and is succeeded by John Forster.
